Shinsegae’s decline follows its involvement in a consortium bidding to acquire the ailing Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo. The consortium, which includes Daou and CJ Group, has been named the preferred bidder in the competitive auction. While the bid amount has not been disclosed, it is reported to be the highest submitted proposal. The consortium’s offer is intended to stabilize JoongAng Ilbo’s balance sheet, support employment, and provide financial assistance for debt repayment and operational normalization. If the acquisition proceeds, the consortium will become the newspaper’s largest shareholder, with proceeds directed to JoongAng Ilbo for debt servicing.
